PSG Overcomes Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the prestigious trophy on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times in the closing moments to take a shock lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to complete a convincing shootout win.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the past thirteen seasons.
